A Quiet Summer in London (historical)

From Fallen London Wiki

London has had a poor track record with summers. This year, people are ready. They lay in extra supplies. Emergency blunderbusses are unsafed. Several revolutionaries are witnessed wearing Masters' robes, 'just in case hierarchy goes squiffy again'.

London is prepared for any conceivable disaster. And nothing happens. [1]

A Quiet Summer ran from the 27th of July 1899 (2026) to the 17th of August. As with previous Estivals, some new items and various items from previous Estivals and the elections were available to purchase for Estival Tokens, and players were given 30 of these at the beginning of the festival. These new items were:

As the addition of Agents made multiple copies of equipment potentially desirable, it was made possible to purchase multiple copies of all equipment. Additionally, new FATE-locked profile headers were made available for each previous Estival.

Unlike previous years, this Estival had no overarching storyline. Instead, players were able to play through the Waswood versions of the previous Estivals (including the Waswood debut of the previous year's Estival, Hell is Missing) as many times as they pleased.

27 July[edit]

"nothing ever happens"

– Xenotron (IGN Blake Thorburn)[2]

Londoners awoke to find little to worry about. The Waswood, Parabola's reposistory of past history, was allowing for players new and old to experience past Estivals. Reliving these past disasters increased a World Quality, Misplaced Nostalgia, which unlocked a variety of rewards at various milestones. Playing through all five unlocked a new mode of address, "Eschatologist".

28 July[edit]

Pig Shrine[3]

"all will be pig and all manner of thing shall be pig"

– Waddleburg (ign: Montrissor)[4]

At 19:40 UTC[5], the first non-economy reward was unlocked; An Insatiable Porcine Investment Vessel at 1,500,000 Misplaced Nostalgia. The community reacted to this with characteristic fervour.

30 July[edit]

"when I'm in a GOAT competition and my opponent is His Amused Lordship:"

– lorewriter[6]

At 6:17 UTC[7], Misplaced Nostalgia reached 3,000,000 and unlocked the next non-economy reward - His Lordship's Largesse, a quality that improved various options to turn in items for Misplaced Nostalgia - both in terms of profit and Nostalgia generated. With this, the optimal Nostalgia strategy for advanced players changed from repeatedly running the shortest Estival (Prelapsarian Museum) to a strategy named "honeybarking", with reached 10.2 Nostalgia per action with a near-zero EPA.[8].

31 July[edit]

"Mr Wines realizing people might not have been thinking about it for one (1) week and staggering drunk over to the bridge where everyone is to toss some coins and leave"

– @landofwindandthrowingshade[9]

At 12:29 UTC[10], Misplaced Nostalgia reached 4,000,000 and unlocked a reward of 20 x Estival Token.

1 August[edit]

"WHAT

OH NO."

– Savato {IGN}[11]

At 22:53 UTC[12], calpico20 reported a new vanity quality, Unnecessary Semantic Conflagrations, gained by climbing into the law-furnace when playing through the Hell is Missing Waswood multiple times.

2 August[edit]

"Anyways one more time, mark my words, this item will have absolutely no relation to the great game. It will be about entirely regular albeit slightly fucked up chess"

– (IGN) Alexandra6109[13]

At 2:16 UTC[14], DanZapman reported the QLD for the seventh and final level of Unnecessary Semantic Conflagrations, "Entirely beyond help".

At 8:42 UTC[15], the next non-economy reward, Portable, Mutable, Unlosable Chess Set was unlocked at 5,000,000 Misplaced Nostalgia.

3 August[edit]

"THE GANDER WAKES! HAIL KOLOMAN!"

– u/Penny_D[16], in reference to That watchful woman

At 6:11 UTC[17], it was confirmed by Bondrewd Did Nothing Wrong that smashing An Insatiable Porcine Investment Vessel could reward as little as a single penny.

4 August[edit]

Croissant-header.png

"Finally, I can eat the croissant my wife bought me this morning... I have been saving it for the occasion"

– George FBG[18]

"normal job, normal game

just here for the croissants"

– Hannah FBG[19]

At 12:36 UTC[20], the next non-economy reward was unlocked; the ability to set one's profile header to the croissant header from Hell is Missing. This also revealed the requirements for the final set of rewards: 6,500,000, 7,000,000 and 7,777,777 Misplaced Nostalgia.

6 August[edit]

"i can't believe that the promise of a fucking CROISSANT HEADER is what got me to log back onto Fallen London. PASTRIES. AN IMAGE OF FRENCH BAKED GOODS IS WHAT GOT ME TO START PLAYING AGAIN. [...]"

– @local-ragamuffin[21]

At 21:14 UTC[22], Misplaced Nostalgia reached 7,000,000 and unlocked the penultimate reward, A Scrap of Imperial Lace of Dubious Provenance.

8 August[edit]

" A reckoning cannot be postponed indefinitely... but until then, we can savor every moment."

– u/BlacksmithNo9359[23]

At 23:05 UTC[24], the final reward - a Vestige of a Starlit Reverie - was unlocked.
