Why does this lose its Epiphany on failure?

Well, I know for a fact that it does, yet I am deeply saddened that this is the case. Thus, the Profound Student is technically better, as he retains the Epiphany to be used on the Eureka! Card, while keeping the very same difficulty... Still, Eureka is the superior option, if one has the chance to ever bl__dy get it.
