Success

A spoiled fight

[…] They pause when you interpose yourself between them and the nervously-smiling protesters […]

A consensus is reached. "Pack this up in an hour," […]

They trudge away. "Thank you," mutters one of the protesters […]. He hands you a pamphlet. […]

Description summary:
You convince the neddy men to leave the protesters alone by looking intimidating. An old man gives you a pamphlet, as well as an earful about their cause: environmental destruction in the marshes caused by a new factory.

Failure

Crowd dispersal

There are too many. […] As you crawl away, you hear a chorus of yelps and thumps […].

It seems they were protesting the construction of a new factory in Bugsby's Marshes. An awful disruption for the local wildlife, by their account.

Description summary:
The neddy men beat you up, along with the rest of the protesters. Later you return, to find a discarded pamphlet, decrying the environmental disruption caused by a new factory.
