Outfits (Guide)

Outfits are a way to save a particular set of wearable items so that you can easily switch between sets of different attribute modifiers. Through progressing the game, the value of having multiple outfits increases as you gain both a greater variety of items and face tests against additional attributes beyond the standard four.

Using your Outfits[edit]

In the My Possessions page of your profile, you will see a "Wear:" dropdown near the top. Initially you have four outfits available to you: Morning, Evening, Incognito, Hard-wearing. These are intended to correspond with the four main attributes, but you can use them however you like and you can rename them.

To alter which items are in an outfit: From the "Wear:" dropdown, select the outfit that you wish to modify. Then change which items you have equipped. And finally press the button next to the "Wear:" dropdown that has an icon of a T-shirt and a tick. Pressing this will update the outfit to save whatever you currently have equipped.

  • Note that you can filter your list of wearable items by attribute that they modify. In the "Show:" dropdown, select any attribute. Your wearable items will then be filtered to just those that modify this attribute, and will be sorted from highest to lowest modifier (for Menace-affecting items, "Increases" sorts before "Reduces").
  • If you lose / sell your last copy of an item that forms part of an outfit, that slot in that outfit will become empty. You will want to update your outfit with a different item for that slot.

To switch from one outfit to another: On the My Possessions page, you can select a different outfit from the "Wear:" dropdown. Alternatively, you can select a different outfit from the "Outfit" dropdown that appears in the game's sidebar. Making changes to outfits and paying for new slots can only be down from the My Possessions page rather than the sidebar.

To rename an outfit: On the My Possessions page, next to the "Wear:" dropdown, you will see a pencil icon. Pressing this will allow you to edit the name of the outfit you are currently wearing. You can rename any of your outfits, including the initial standard four.

To highlight a particular outfit on your user profile: On the My Possessions page, next to the "Wear:" dropdown, you will see a five-pointed star icon. Pressing this will mark whichever outfit you are wearing to be your favourite, and anyone looking at your profile will see that outfit displayed as "Favoured Outfit". Pressing the star icon again whilst wearing your favoured outfit will stop it being marked as your favourite, and restore your profile to instead display what you are "Currently Wearing".

To begin with, it makes sense to use the standard four outfits for the best items you own in each of the four main attributes. As you unlock further game content, you may wish to instead customise your outfits to better fit with whichever activities you perform most often (for example you may have a high- Zeefaring outfit for use while Zailing).

Expanding your number of Outfits[edit]

In total, you can have a maximum of seventeen outfits:

  • 4 standard outfits that all players have.
  • 3 additional outfits that can be gained in-game by spending items.
  • 4 additional outfits that are granted to Exceptional Friends (EXCEPTIONAL FRIENDSHIP).
  • 2 additional outfits that are granted to Enhanced Exceptional Friends (EXCEPTIONAL FRIENDSHIP).
  • 4 additional outfits that can be bought for FATE.

In-game purchases[edit]

The storylet to Expand your Wardrobe appears in Your Lodgings when you become A Person of Some Importance - A Person of Some Importance. You can choose only one of the following options, each of which requires you to have 3 in a BDR stat, a +10 item that can be bought from the Bazaar (all of which are shared best-in-slot), and to spend an item worth 62.50E :

Second additional slot[edit]

Successfully completing one of the above requirements then replaces the storylet with Further expand your Wardrobe. Again, you can choose only one of the following options. These each require you to be wearing items that grant increases to two advanced skills (it doesn't matter what combination of items you're wearing, so long as those two skills are increased), and to spend an item worth 62.50E (except the Queen Mate is only worth 25E ):

Option Requirements Cost
Acquire a Viric armoire from a Shifty Silverer Mithridacy and Glasswork 1 x Mortification of a Great Power

Third additional slot[edit]

Having unlocked your second wardrobe slot, you then get presented with a single option on Further expand your Wardrobe. This requires you to be wearing items that grant increases to secondary attributes (it doesn't matter what combination of items you're wearing, so long as the sum of the three attributes is at least 3), and to spend an item worth 62.50E :

Option Requirements Cost
Purchase an ineradicable cabinet from the Unsanctioned Relicker Combined Inerrant + Insubstantial + Neathproofed of 3+ 1 x Primaeval Hint

Exceptional Friendship[edit]

Exceptional Friendship is bought by paying Failbetter Games a monthly premium. In return, you get various benefits including access to a new Exceptional Story every month, a maximum action pool of 40 actions, a larger Opportunity Deck, and access to The House of Chimes. One of the other benefits is that you get four additional outfit slots.

As soon as you start an Exceptional Friendship subscription, you will have the four extra outfit slots. One month's subscription lasts to the same time on the same day of the month following the time you started the subscription. If you do not renew the subscription (which can be set to automatically renew for continuity) then you will lose the additional outfit slots when your subscription runs out.

These additional slots are clearly marked in your list of outfits, highlighted in gold text with an "Exceptional" subscript for clarity, so you can easily tell which slots you are at risk of losing.

Enhanced Exceptional Friendship[edit]

This higher level of subscription gives an additional Exceptional Story each month (chosen from a curated list from the back catalogue), more votes at the House of Chimes, and three seven-action refreshes a month. It also gives you a further two additional outfit slots.

These work in exactly the same way as the Exceptional Friendship outfit slots, and are highlighted in gold text with an "Enhanced Exceptional" subscript for clarity.

Fate purchases[edit]

You can outright buy up to four additional permanent outfit slots at a cost of 20 FATE each.

To do so, go to the My Possessions page of your profile, and in the "Wear:" dropdown near the top select "Unlock another outfit...". You can then purchase extra outfits, one at a time, by spending 20 FATE for each one.
