Nightmares[edit]

Nightmares are becoming a problem. Some nights you hardly dare sleep. If this reaches 5, bad things may begin to happen. Don't let it reach 8.

Nightmares most often result from Watchful actions, as well as many cards concerning recurring dreams. At level 5, they will add the undiscardable card A merry gentleman to your London deck. You can remove it for the week by Greeting the Merry Gentleman, which depending on whether you succeed the associated Watchful check will grant either a Boon that slows down your Nightmares gain or a Burden that increases it. Both will prevent drawing the card and either will be lost by Time, the Healer comes. Furthermore, at level 6 you might begin to draw certain undiscardable red-bordered dream cards, which despite being associated with dreams you might be pursuing won't actually give you any progress.

At level 8, you will be send to A state of some confusion or, under certain conditions, The Mirror-Marches. The latter occurs if you have any Memories of Light, have Having Recurring Dreams: Is Someone There? 10 or more, or usually whenever you find yourself going mad outside of London. Note that it is generally more beneficial to be sent to the Mirror-Marches, as the state of some confusion will remove a chunk of your Dreams qualities upon leaving, whereas the Marches will only lower Is Someone There. Consult the Menace Locations guide for further information on these.

Extra-Metropolitan Considerations[edit]

Nightmares 8 will result in moving to the Mirror-Marches at Zee, including most islands, in the Hinterlands, in the Tracklayers' City, and all locations on the Roof, including the Stacks. Nightmares 5 also clogs many other decks:

In Parabola, reaching Nightmares 8 triggers Conflagration, which lowers your Glasswork and Monstrous Anatomy skills by a single level's worth of points. These qualities are relatively easy to raise again though, and having this happen is actually a prerequisite for hunting the Storm-bird.

Scandal[edit]

Scandal is getting out of hand. If this reaches 8, something bad may happen.

Scandal most often results from Persuasive actions. Reaching Scandal 8 will force you into disgraced exile in the Tomb-Colonies in a maelstrom of scandal. As far as London goes, that's it. Marvellous, innit?

Extra-Metropolitan Considerations[edit]

Few people actually care about Scandal outside of London. In the Hinterlands you will also be forced into exile as a reasonably high-profile individual. Additionally, Scandal 5 adds the following cards to decks:

In Risen Burgundy, reaching Scandal 8 triggers Unworthy of a Great Privilege, which raises Nightmares some in exchange for losing a chunk of Scandal and a level of Chthonosophy. The advanced skill is annoying to raise back up, but this is required to gain Judged by the Duchy, which in turn is required should you one day desire to To Make a Moth.
