So, you want to make yourself a Tapestry-Moth? Be warned, this is not a profitable endeavour, though the equipment does serve as strict Best-in-Slot Neathproofed Affiliation. If you want a quick shopping list for everything you need to make a Moth, look no further than the Checklist. If you want a detailed explanation of each step, on the other hand, the full guide is for you.

Fuel for Glory's Fire and Acquaintance: The Moth-Eaten Mortician[edit]

Before you can pursue Autolepidopterist, you must first raise Fuel for Glory's Fire. You may have a few points of this quality from playing the Firmament questline already! If not, it's obtainable through the deck. The most reliable sources are The Donjon of Lilies > Unravel a fever of glory, The Banners of the Guilds > Watch for Tapestry-Moths, and (if you already have a level) any option on Glories and Half-Lives. If you have Nightmares 5, it can also be obtained through Dreams of Honour and Glory > Sink into the dreams, or without any nightmares, occasionally, through Heralds from Elsewhere > Sight a Circumspect Smuggler (though this option gives only 1 CP, while all the others give 2).

Once you reach Fuel for Glory's Fire 10, you'll need to draw Glories and Half-Lives once more to play Buy a round for a Memorious Guildsman (with a cost of 50) at a ( Persuasive + 15 * Mithridacy) 220 challenge. Succeeding this challenge will acquaint you with The Moth-Eaten Mortician, which unlocks Risen Burgundy > To Make a Moth, allowing you to gain Autolepidopterist.

Progression revolves around increasing your Autolepidopterist quality, giving you the Metamorphosed Moth-Self at Autolepidopterist 21. Each step involves an ever-increasing Kataleptic Toxicology + Neathproofed check. See Outfit Planner – Weighted Combination Challenges for details on an optimal outfit for these checks.

Autolepidopterist 0-11[edit]

Make dye from your aches and pains ( Wounds)
Make dye from your fears and nightmares ( Nightmares)
Make pigment from your social missteps ( Scandal)
Make dye from your guilt and mischief ( Suspicion)

Each step requires 5 levels of a menace ( Wounds, Nightmares, Scandal, or Suspicion), and consumes 10 CP of it. At 7 levels and 7 CP of a menace, you can get 3 cashouts, bringing you to 3 levels and 3 CP of that menace. See Menaces (Guide) for the most efficient way to raise any particular menace.

It may be worth grabbing Judged by the Duchy while you have high scandal—it'll be useful later, and now you can easily get rid of the remaining Scandal.

So how do you go about grinding menaces in Risen Burgundy? Through the deck, of course! Some of these require failing checks, some give it just as part of the action. In addition, you can venture into the Stacks, some actions there give Wounds and Nightmares as well. You may find it useful to attempt a High Sancta The High Sancta run before doing this stage— Wings of Change greatly increases all menace gain.

Wounds[edit]

Nightmares[edit]

Scandal[edit]

Suspicion[edit]

Autolepidopterist 12-13[edit]

Pulp your own good name

Each step costs 1 x Notability, requiring you to have at least 5. As such, it's recommended to have at least 6 x Notability to do both steps in one trip (leaving you at 4).

Autolepidopterist 14[edit]

Create a ducal dye ( Burgundian Beneficence)
Extract a rebellious dye ( Against Time and Kings)

This requires either 5 x Burgundian Beneficence or 5 x Against Time and Kings, which are consumed. These are both progress qualities that can be gained through cards in Risen Burgundy (though be wary: Having both at 5 unlocks an unprofitable autofire card that increases your menaces too).

Autolepidopterist 15[edit]

Create a pigment of absence

This one requires and consumes Irrigo. It is highly recommended to use this to your advantage to get an extra Cave of the Nadir run.

Autolepidopterist 16[edit]

Affix the city's judgement in colour

Judged by the Duchy, a requirement for this step, is gained in Risen Burgundy deck > Unworthy of a Great Privilege > Flee the judgement of Burgundy, an autofire card that unlocks at Scandal 8, reduces Scandal and Chthonosophy, and increases Nightmares, alongside gaining you Judged by the Duchy. See the above section for details.

Autolepidopterist 17[edit]

Offer hues of all that you could have been, and are no longer

The requirements here are relatively basic. 10 x Memory of a Much Lesser Self and 10 x Memory of a Much Stranger Self have grinding guides at Mysteries Grinding (Guide)#Memory of a Much Lesser Self and Mysteries Grinding (Guide)#Memory of a Much Stranger Self respectively.

Autolepidopterist 18[edit]

Provide a concentrate of purest self-assurance

For this you will need a Concentrate of Self. One can be extracted from a Horrifying Confirmation that you were Right All Along in Station VIII > The Station for Factory VIII, or 'Station VIII' > Special Extracts, gained from most conclusions to a specific parabolan war campaign, or even from Your Very Own Hellworm > Milking your Hellworm. Unlike the previous steps, this one does not have a Kataleptic Toxicology challenge associated with it.

Autolepidopterist 19[edit]

Ask what he means

Nothing much to this. Go on, ask the question. Aren't you curious?

Autolepidopterist 20[edit]

Here, you face a great decision. Both, of course, cost a hefty sum of 31250, and will finally gain you A Metamorphosed Moth-Self, but are you willing to do what is required?

Offer a body that is you and is not

A true Tapestry-Moth requires true death. Now, of course, your own death is unacceptable... Unless you could sacrifice a self that both is and isn't your own? With the proper Discordant Law not enacted (level 1, Someone Following You, see The Hurlers (Guide) for details) and proper knowledge of that which does not exist, one might be able to sacrifice oneself to oneself. Naturally, murdering yourself will increase A Bringer of Death by 1 CP, but perhaps that is something you revel in. In either case, the choice is done.

Offer a substitute body, and the promise of your transformation

Perhaps there is a way to... cheat the system. With a coffin containing a substitute body (now reliably grindable through the Against Time and Kings carousel, Risen Burgundy deck > The Spoils of Rebellion > The coffin) and a sound of wings, demanding a transformation (gained in The High Sancta from failing a Counterlight check, see The High Sancta (Guide)), you could hoist the burden of death onto an already-dead body, conveniently also removing the nasty Wings of Change burden and the sound that follows you. Unlike the other option, this does not raise A Bringer of Death, but will gain you your moth just the same.
