From Fallen London Wiki

This is a newbie guide for the folks who are New and Overwhelmed and just want step by step instructions on how to get everything. A much more detailed guide is available at https://fallenlondon.wiki/wiki/Fruits_of_the_Zee_Festival_(Guide)

Explanation of mechanics[edit]

  • Start Fruitzival by going to Mutton Island. Zail there if you have a ship, or talk to the urchin via the global storylet. On Mutton Island proper, play through the introductory storylet, “Mutton Island, Barren”, and it will unlock the supplication and diving storylets.
  • To build Fivefold Devotion: Via the storylet “Supplication on the Shore”, play any of the regular actions here to build up Fivefold Devotion. All actions are equivalent in how much Devotion they build. You can build Devotion to a maximum of 11.
  • To dive: Once you have at least 5 Fivefold Devotion, visit the storylet “The Fishing Boats, Empty” and play “Set to zee” to be taken to the diving activity. Here, play cards in the Opportunity Deck to obtain items or dive deeper. The deeper you dive, the more valuable the items you can find. Obtaining an item or failing a check to dive deeper will return you to the surface - failing to dive deeper also inflicts a small amount of menace. The higher your Fivefold Devotion, the better your luck when diving deeper - at 11 Devotion you are guaranteed to be able to reach the deepest level.
  • In the second week of the festival, diving will close and trading will open. You will be able to trade items that you’ve received from diving for good equipment and a special event currency, Thalassic Favour; Favour can be used to buy a variety of items, from more equipment to an advanced ship. However, you won’t be able to dive for any more items to trade, so you need to get all of your diving in this week!

Priorities[edit]

1. Advanced Ship[edit]

(Buying an advanced ship is only possible if you already own at least a basic ship, e.g. the Rusty Tramp Steamer, clipper, yacht, or zub. If you don’t, skip this section.)

In the second week of the festival, you will be able to trade around 2000 Thalassic Favour for an advanced ship, all of which are much better than the basic ships you can get at Wolfstack. It’s VERY easy to get 2000 Favour and VERY hard to get these ships any other time of the year, so it’s a very good use of your time to grab one.

To build 2000 Favour, you’ll want to build up 10 Fivefold Devotion and then follow this strategy when diving:

  • Depth 1: Just dive deeper.
  • Depth 2: Just dive deeper.
  • Depth 3:
    • If you draw “Well-Disguised Trinkets”, take the item.
    • Otherwise, dive deeper.
  • Depth 4:
    • If you draw any of: “A Cabin-Fragment” or “Easy Pickings” or “Well-Disguised Trinkets”, take the item.
    • Otherwise, dive deeper.
  • Depth 5:
    • If you draw any either “A Cabin-Fragment” or “A Shattered Prow”, take the item.
    • Otherwise, if you draw “Easy Pickings” or “Well-Disguised Trinkets”, take the item.
    • Otherwise, if you draw “Tangled in the Rigging”, take the item.
    • Otherwise, if you draw “Unlucky Prisoner”, take the item.
    • Otherwise… sorry, you’re out of luck. Take whatever you want or visit the Bride (see below).

Do this over and over until you have 2000 Favour worth of items. You can check how much Favour you have back on Mutton Island, via “The Fishing Boats, Empty” -> “Consider your zee treasures”.

2. Coral Equipment[edit]

When diving, you have the opportunity to pick up pieces of coral that can be traded for good equipment in the second week of the festival.

The coral in question, where to find them, and what they trade for:

  • Barnacled Headpiece, found on “Among the Deep-Fish”: trades for a hat that increases Persuasive and reduces Troubled Waters buildup.
  • Gorgonian Reef-Rock, found on “A Rusting Anchor”: trades for a clothing that increases Shadowy and Insubstantial.
  • Grasping Coral, found on “A Reef of Wrecks”: trades for gloves that increase Shadowy.
  • Pedestrian Polyp, found on “Old Wounds”: trades for shoes that increase Watchful and Mithridacy.
  • Spinebound Oddity, found on “An Obscured Glitter”: trades for an adornment that increases Shadowy, Respectable, and Inerrant.

As coral is can appear at any depth, including the shallowest, you will only need to build 5 Fivefold Devotion before diving. Dive over and over until you have one of each coral.

3. Visiting the Bride[edit]

Build 11 Fivefold Devotion - this will guarantee that you can reach the bottom of the dive. Then dive to the very bottom. Once you’re there, take a look at your storylets (not cards), and you should see a storylet called “Her Fivefold Symmetry”. Play it to obtain the quality “Discovered: the Pentamerous Bride”, which will allow you to obtain a transport that increases Zeefaring in the second week of the festival.

You can visit her four more times afterwards, but you won’t get anything other than text. Likewise, if you already got the transport in a previous year, you can visit her again, but you won’t get a duplicate transport. You can, however, get a Fecund Amber later in the festival for visiting her at least once.

4. Favour Equipment[edit]

In addition to the coral equipment, there’s a lot of other equipment that can be bought with Favour later in the festival. Some of this equipment can also be picked up by diving, but for simplicity’s sake, I will assume that you will buy everything with Favour.

If you want to buy all equipment, you will need 2000 Favour. (That means that if you want an advanced ship too, you need 4000 Favour total: 2000 for the ship, and 2000 for the equipment.) This may sound like a lot, but it’s pretty straightforward to get.

Again, following the Favour-maximizing strategy…

Build up 10 Fivefold Devotion and then follow this strategy when diving:

Take whatever you want or visit the Bride.

Do this over and over until you have enough Favour’s worth of items. You can check how much Favour you have back on Mutton Island, via “The Fishing Boats, Empty” -> “Consider your zee treasures”.

5. Duplicate Equipment (for Agents)[edit]

You may want to grab duplicate equipment for your Agents. How much extra you grab is up to you, though I would personally grab two extra, or three if you’re an Exceptional Friend.

The coral equipment is the best statwise, so start there. Once you have as many duplicate corals as you desire, you can see about getting extra Favour for duplicate Favour equipment. The stats on these aren’t as great, but there are a few standouts:

  • Keelgraspers (150 Favour): +1 Zeefaring gloves, good for nautical plots.
  • Sun-Seared Silken Gloves (150 Favour): +1 A Player of Chess gloves, good for spy plots.
  • Semi-Automated Mary Lloyd (100 Favour): +4 Dangerous transport, not much but it’s the best free Dangerous transport unless you really want to grind duplicate Hellworms for your agents (you probably don’t).
  • Corpulent Carriage (250 Favour): +1 Monstrous Anatomy transport, there are no plots that use Monstrous Anatomy but who knows what the future will bring. Also gives +3 Shadowy.
  • The Forsaken Crown of a Grand Devil (250 Favour): +1 Red Science hat, there are no plots that use Red Science but again, who knows what the future will bring.

The other items and their Favour costs can be seen here if you would like to consider their stats and whether you want duplicates for your Agents. (Note that the Oneiric Pearl, Baited Riddle, Vestige of a Starlit Reverie, and Sample of Lacreous Affection are not equipment.)

EDITED TO ADD: Since this is the first year that duplicate equipment will be available to keep, we are unsure how purchasing duplicate Favour equipment also obtained via diving will work (e.g. the Semi-Automated Mary Lloyd, which is not only purchasable with Favour but able to be obtained during diving). Since the diveables can also be traded in for Favour, it's possible that duplicates of them will not be purchasable during the second week. If you want to be safe, pick up any duplicate diveables while diving, before the second week rolls around.

6. Surplus Favour[edit]

From here on out, there’s not really much to do but grind more Favour to trade for the non-equipment items. Just follow the instructions in 4. Favour Equipment if you want to do that.
