OK. For the material reward the checks don't matter. You only want to succeed them to lessen the menaces you acquire... but given how ridiculous they are you might be better off equipping all the anti-Nightmares/Wounds gear you own and pray.
For the boons however... for the boons it's an 11+ action luck check that tells you at 2 actions if you have a chance to win or not.
Really simplifying it you start with random Bodily Tendency. If that rolled low you only get options to lower further or randomise, if high to raise or randomise, and all checks only give single digit CP. This means getting into the right range for that side's boons can be hard, and pushing from low to high or high to low borderline impossible.
