When she descends, she does so utterly. Water follows her down like the tail of a comet: the cost of such an act is uncountable. She sings as she plunges, a deep riptide of a song that roars of peace and the grave; of the two being one and the same, although the price of the former is always the latter.

At last, she is gone. It is all over: the world no longer contains the whale. There is an eery lightness to the world, the sun rising is dimmer than it ought to be. This is apocryphal, you realise, and the whale its anchor. And with that gone...
