From: A Pirate Steamer!

The corsairs of Gaider's Mourn have a complicated system of signs and passphrases, used to identify friend from foe. The codes change often, and are just as often ignored.

Success

Excessive subtlety

With hooded lantern and half-raised flag you [...] invoke the Mourner's Passage. [...] After much subtle back and forth [...], you hear a loud voice bark from the steamer.

"Stand down lads, they's one of us!" [...] Codes are dispensed with, and chatter flows freely.

Failure

Fired upon!

Either these pirates are not from Gaider's Mourn, or they are indifferent to the usual pass-signs and truce-markers. You exchange blistering cannonfire across the Snares[...] Eventually, bored [...] or cowed [...], the pirates peel off in search of other prey.
