Beginning of a beginning: Escape from the New Newgate[edit]

Tutorial Prison

Welcome to Fallen London! (Blue cards, Newcomer to the Neath and others)[edit]

Get familiar with the UI and game mechanics[edit]

Right after you have landed in Fallen London, your character cannot do much, and things they can do probably don't make much sense. The second part of the tutorial walks you through the game UI and mechanics, using a series of blue-bordered cards and storylets, with each of those introducing and explaining a single aspect of the game.

Cards[edit]

The Matter of Opportunity - the very first one, explaining how the opportunity deck and opportunity cards work.

A Dubiously Shrewd Rat - the first card you draw once you unlock your Lodgings. The Rat moves in, eager to help yet another newcomer to get their bearings, and gets his own storylet The Dubiously Shrewd Rat's Guide to Fallen London - see below for more details.

A Diamond in the Fluff - the first of many (maybe, likely, hopefully) valuable items you find in Fallen London. Once you pick up the diamond, you will be taken to Smiling Fence's shop to learn how to buy and sell items. After that, Bazaar tab is unlocked for you.

Opportunities for Ingratiation - this card helps you further boost your Renown with up to three faction, up to 10.

SUNLESS SEA: Intruding upon Ratty Larceny - once you unlock your Lodgings, you can draw this card. It isn't, strictly speaking, a part of onboarding, but if you own a copy of Sunless Sea, it unlocks a bonus for your SS character. Otherwise, you can get a Constables or Criminals favour from other options on the card.

Storylets[edit]

Stories of the Fifth City - unlocks a pinned group of storylets that aren't specific to a location. Seasonal and timed events, and current month exceptional story previews go here. These can add up quickly, so the whole group can be collapsed to free some space on the page.

Winding Streets and Treacherous Cobbles - unlocks the map of Fallen London. You can move around now!

Find Somewhere to Live! - gives your character several ways to get a permanent place to live. This unlocks your Lodgings as a location, and expands your active hand from one to two cards(?). Unlocking Lodgings also enables Your Activities on the map - not much here for the moment, but it will expand as you character progresses through the game. Short Stories (Guide) Flash Lays (Guide) Professional Activities (Guide)

A Grubby Inquiry - choose your Addressed as: quality. The game text mentions you only by your title, so you'll be seeing it a lot. Addressed as: can be changed anytime from an opportunity card, but the first time is done directly from a storylet.

A Mysterious Benefactor! - choose one of four mini-stories, each based on one of the four primary stats. On completion, you will receive a wearable item, a new permanent card in your deck, and a tutorial for stories played exclusively through opportunity cards.

A more detailed guide is available: The Protégé of a Mysterious Benefactor (Guide)

The Matter of Fate - after a quick rundown of what Fate currency is and what you get buy with it, unlocks the Visit your Exceptional Library permanent storylet in your Lodgings. Exceptional Library contains all Exceptional stories you own but haven't started yet (unless it's a current month story - that one goes to the Stories of the Fifth City).

Fifth City Factionalism - unlocks Opportunities for Ingratiation Factions (Guide)

The Matter of the Mail - unlocks Your Social Engagements on the Fallen London map (calendar icon in the bottom right corner) Social Actions (Guide) Marriage (Guide)

The Matter of Money - here you can choose one of four starter Professions. At the beginning, the main purpose of a profession is to give a weekly payout and a significant boost to the corresponding primary attribute. Professions_(Guide)#Training_Professions

Blanchett's Correct and Proper Form - explains how to add other players to your Contacts, and what Favourable Circumstances are.

The Matter of Letters - for a paltry sum, unlock the Epistolary Matters storylet in your Social Activities. You can now send a vast variety of letters to your Contacts for fun, profit and occasional crimes against physical reality.

The Curse of Ambition -
