It leads you towards the Blind Helmsman. You gather this was the Monkey's choice.

Success

A bitter bout

[…]Its simian impatience has cost it the entire match in the first round![…]I might consider accepting a Chance.[…]Its eyes flick to you.[…]Accepted[…]The Monkey gives you a wink[…]"I offer a Chance of my own!"[…]The Monkey shakes its head[…]

Description summary:
The trimmed description - more so than other trimmed descriptions - is a mere fraction of the story that is told. The Monkey bets everything on the first hand, has terrible cards (maybe a pair?), and loses. Mr Pages generously offers to accept the Monkey's Chance: one more round, all or nothing.

That said, the Monkey asked you to accompany it because it intends to wager you as its Chance. Pages accepts, over your objection. The Monkey's strategy is now clear: Pages started with far more coins, but in a single all-or-nothing round they are useless.

The Monkey reveals an Ascension (a seven-card straight flush) from three to nine. Pages desperately offers a Chance of its own, including a Firkin of Hesperidean Cider or a Vial of Masters' Blood, but it even refuses Pages' Chance. The cause of Pages' disdain for the Monkey becomes clear.

As it turns out, Pages had an Ascension of its own, but only from two to eight. So the Monkey wins.
