Strange findings
The catalogue system makes no mortal sense. There is no clear collation order, and the categories are nonsensical. You open one of the minute drawers, labelled 'Excised Taxa'. The drawer inside is as long as your arm; the cards inside are thin as onionskin. Each one carries a few words – 'Madagascar Deer', 'Shrike-Moth', other more unfamiliar names – and a reference number with an improbable number of digits.
Worse, this catalogue seems to be but a section of a much larger system. There must be dozens or hundreds of cabinets like these, scattered throughout the library. Ultimately, you can only correlate a few dots, develop some intuition, and pick a direction to continue searching.
