Sooooo… is there a mistake somewere, am I overlooking something, or is there literally no way of getting rid of your Unaccountably Peckish once it is raised this high?

You're overlooking something.

The other UP cards will still show up at higher levels, and your UP can be reduced from them. However, that's painful and frustrating, which admittedly is the whole point of SMEN, but there are easier ways.

If you have access to Mahogany Hall, instructing your pupil to go to the market and purchase food will reduce UP on success with no ill effects. This is best done with high Persuasive The entrance of the Labyrinth of Tigers will also sell Rubbery Lamps, which will reduce UP on success or failure. This is best done with high Dangerous.

For UP from 1 to 6, there is zero cost to reduce it via opportunity cards. By the time you are Seeking, you would already have 5 card lodgings, so in the worst case, you can afford to block 4 slots with the non-discardable cards for UP 3-6, and keep flipping the last card till you get Ace of Hungers or Two of Bats, both of which have options to reduce UP for free.

For UP 7 and above, Take some Refreshment in the Labyrinth of Tigers is the most efficient way.

Seeking is a long term process. Some definitely start it early, well before hainvng access to 5 (or even 4) card lodgings.

I've been Seeking for a while with 3 card lodgings. It's painful, naturally, but the easy answer is that you simply don't reduce your UP at first. You cycle black cards to get the high level ones, then wait a week to spend them for a point of SMEN.

If you want to clear out UP, it's always possible via cards: you can't go below a 3 card lodging, and this is the only black card which can't reduce UP. As others have said, though, the Labyrinth and Mahogany Hall are much less painful ways to lower it.
