The Shapeless Chandler sits silent in his hollow, then nods. He reaches out a hand, gouging long fingers into the stony unflesh of the leviathan, and retracts a fistful of something translucent and glistering. The flickering candlelight plays tricks – one moment the substance seems to wobble like blubber, and the next it looks hard as crystal.
While you observe he renders it down into tallow, threading it through with wick, never moving from his little whaleside hollow – or acknowledging your presence. At length, it is done, and he thrusts a candle into your hands. The wax is hard and unyielding; will it burn at all?
