Fallen London Wiki:Notable Changes

From Fallen London Wiki

With our impending move, there are some changes that will be made to the viewing and editing experience. This page serves as a (non-exhaustive) overview of said changes.

Viewing[edit]

  • The most notable change is, as mentioned in the linked announcement, the fact that the wiki has a new skin.
    • We tried to make the skin reminiscent of Fallen London's colours.
    • It's also significantly wider than Fandom's Oasis skin.
    • The skin is also responsive - the same skin is used for both desktop and mobile. We hope that this improves the reading experience on mobile.
  • Page tools are no longer in a dropdown menu in the top-right corner of the page, but are discrete links in the top-right corner, as well as being additional tools being listed in the left and right sidebars.
  • Unfortunately, the skin that we're using for this wiki lacks Fandom's top-bar nested dropdown navigation.
  • It is currently a known issue that many UI elements are significantly lighter than the rest of the skin. This may be changed in future, though it's a relatively complex endeavour.
  • Profile pictures are not available. It is possible, though unlikely, that they may return in future.
  • We've taken advantage of OpenGraph tags to improve link previews.

Editing[edit]

  • Important: Due to differences in our skin compared to Fandom's Oasis skin, the default image format should be [[File:Deportestration.png|right]] instead of [[File:Deportestration.png|thumb]]. Oasis did not show borders around thumbnail images, but our skin does.
  • Perhaps the most drastic change that we've implemented is that VisualEditor is not installed on this wiki. The vast majority of content pages on this wiki use templates, and in editors' experiences, the WYSIWYG ability of VisualEditor is rarely something that's useful.
  • We've had to come up with replacements for some of the more useful Fandom features:
    • Comments are available via an extension. Existing comments have been migrated over.
    • User Blogs have also been migrated over. Creating a blog post does not start on your user page, but rather on Special:CreateBlogPost.
    • Message Walls have been replaced by user talk pages. We've loaded a MediaWiki gadget by default that provides some missing features, e.g. adding replies, creating new topics, etc. Existing messages have been migrated over.
  • The article size limit has been increased to 3 MB. This means that more templates can be included on any given page before things start breaking (most notably Convene a Board Meeting of the Great Hellbound Railway). This limit can also be increased if needed.
