The man portrayed in the statue is the Immanent, the prisoner from your dreams of flame. The Starved Men believe that he is an imprisoned angel, and that when he breaks free, their labour will finally cease.
The Shepherd speaks with disgust – though little detail – of the bloody rites of the Zenith. He violated those rites, and for that he was banished from here. But only during those rites can anyone but the Illuminated Pastor enter the Gates.
