(Kavka's Toxin Puzzle (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kavka%27s_toxin_puzzle) asks whether it's possible to intend a thing while knowing you will go back on your intent later. This, I suppose, is at once the same and the opposite. You will know nothing later, your intent and your sacrifice will be entirely obscured, and yet... don't you want to be the sort of person who pays the price? Therefore, shouldn't you pay the price, even when you'll never know that you did so?)

  • 23:59, 30 May 2024 67.242.25.201 talk replied to a comment on the article Ambition: Enigma (Moving past the political stuff here, I truly don't understand what the first commenter is mad about. Enigma is explicitly a reward-less puzzle box that's only relevant for people who find the hunt to be its own justification. There's nothing else in FL lost by not pursuing it, and writing inaccessible works is a perfectly reasonable choice with a long history. I'd ask the commenter if they feel similarly angry about Kryptos, and if not why not? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kryptos (Beyond...)

  • 02:14, 16 May 2024 67.242.25.201 talk replied to a comment on the article Sit down next to Mr Apples (A (partial) counterpoint to "wait for Fruits of the Zee": if you're doing Light Fingers (and don't want to wait for Fruits) this saves money. The Counterfeit Constellation task costs ~690 Echoes for the base option, versus 55 Echoes for the Yacht option. Success here costs 187.5 and failure 47.5, so you can afford far more than the expected failures and still save Echoes. If you've got a ship you don't want to give up that's tougher, but with a Tramp Steamer you'll save echoes *and* reduce t...)

  • 02:09, 16 May 2024 67.242.25.201 talk commented on the article Light Fingers: A Counterfeit Constellation (The Fruits of the Zee Yacht is a clear winner here, but even without that it seems to be worth trading up. If you try for a Yacht, four failures and a success (slightly more than the expected number) will cost you 377.5 Echoes. Swapping the base choice to the Yacht choice saves 687.5 Echoes, so you can afford far more failures than average and still turn a profit. If you're set on the Clipper or Zubmarine, or have another FotZ option already, this may change - you'll have to invest in swapp...)

  • 18:35, 7 May 2024 67.242.25.201 talk replied to a comment on the article The Restless Quartermaster's Warehouse (Note that the Element of Dawn is inaccessible except via this, Hallowmas, or fate-locked options. It has only one use which doesn't consume it, so there's no real need to exceed 1, but this is perhaps the best source for it. The other rewards are a pain to procure, but I don't believe any others are unavailable via normal play.)
