Fate
Fate can be used to purchase premium content, extra storylines or to gain faster progression. Fate is bought with real money, and small amounts of it can be gained from completing major storylines (up to 13 - with Ambition: Nemesis and optimal choices).
The current price of fate (October 2020) ranges from 4 for USD 1.00 to 280 for USD 50.00, which works out to 17.86 to 25 US cents each.
More details on buying Fate can be found on the Fallen London site.

Nex[edit]
Fate is the predecessor and successor of Nex, a currency that was introduced in 2012[1] and used to exist over the entirety of StoryNexus before being retired in 2015[2]. Whereas Nex could only be bought with real money, Fate still was rewarded from completing major storylines and could only be used within Fallen London. Fate was worth the same as Nex. They both could be used to purchase premium content, extra storylines or to gain faster progression.
If you purchased something Fated, the game would first deduct the amount from your Fate before decreasing your Nex. (Example: You owned 10 Fate and 30 Nex. You selected a locked storyline which costs 20 Fate. Your 10 Fate was spent and then the remainder was taken from your Nex; you were left with 0 Fate and 20 Nex.)
