'''Second Chances''' can be spent either 5 at a time to increase the respective stat from the "Attend to Matters of <stat name>" action in your Social Engagements, or 1 at a time to essentially "replay" a failed check if you spend them while doing the check. If you use one on a check and fail, you may (but not always) choose "Perhaps not", back out, and try again, useful if you prefer to spend another Second Chance rather than risk it at the listed probability. Keep in mind that backing out will double the required amount of Second Chances until you succeed at the check.

Note you don't get back your Second Chance if you succeed on the first try - it is spent in any case. 

Most options to get Second Chances are capped at around 20 to 25. It may be therefore be most worthwhile to spend them, optionally alongside with [[:Category:Mood|Moods]], for difficult checks (for end-game players, see the respective lists on [[Watchful#Highest Challenges|Watchful]], [[Shadowy#Highest Challenges|Shadowy]], [[Dangerous#Highest Challenges|Dangerous]] and [[Persuasive#Highest Challenges|Persuasive]]). 

If you still have no use for them, consider sending some of them to your friends via {{IL|The gift of admiration}}.
Additionally, there are rare uses for them straight-up, e.g. on {{IL|The end of battles}} in the {{IL|Cave of the Nadir}}.

Below is a somewhat filtered list of generally repeatable actions where Second Chances may be obtained. Generally speaking, though, Social Actions may be your best options.

* {{IL|Everyone deserves a second chance}} on the [[Conflict Cards|Conflict Card]] of Church and the Great Game, for 1 of each.
* A friend can send you 2 of each from {{From|The gift of admiration}}.
* {{From|Gain Second Chances}}, gives 1 of each.
* {{IL|A Magnificent Feast!}}, an item available almost only in the [[Advent Calendar]], gives 1 of each when consumed.
* If you have access to {{IL|The Temple Club}}, you have a 50% chance to get 2 Second Chances per {{IL|Throw in a coin and take a drink}}.

===Wedding advice===
While [[Marriage (Guide) | speaking to guests at one's wedding]], it is possible to obtain uncapped second chances. Though this uniquely allows grinding, it is also time-consuming, somewhat expensive, and certainly frowned upon by the Masters. You should probably only do this using a non-PoSI as the "dupe", as proposal and divorce costs are higher when toying with the affections of people of consequence.

{{IL|Hard-Earned Lesson|1 x}} costs {{IL|Organising a Wedding|10 x}} and all others cost {{IL|Organising a Wedding|5 x}}. Further, you will want to target {{IL|Organising a Wedding|Appearance=OaW|200-1000 x}} while planning to have {{IL|Organising a Wedding|Appearance=OaW}} left for guests.

For an endgame player, the best options in order of unlock are

* [[Locate a reliable vicar]] (to {{IL|Organising a Wedding|Appearance=OaW|33 x}}), then
* [[Source food from local street-vendors]] 5 times (until {{IL|Organising a Wedding|Appearance=OaW|83 x}}, buying rats from the Bazaar), then
* [[Get proper authorisation for the celebrations]] as many times as necessary ({{IL|Legal Document|1 x}} can be obtained in 6 actions in [[Hunting Bees in Old Newgate (Guide) | Old Newgate]], thus approaching {{IL|Organising a Wedding|Appearance=OaW|9 x}} per action)

Ignoring proposal and divorce costs, and assuming you only care for second chances, in the limit of {{IL|Organising a Wedding|Appearance=OaW|1000 x}} during planning, you will spend about 230 {{E}} to receive {{IL|Hard-Earned Lesson|50 x}} in about 150 actions or 100 other second chances in about 200 actions.

==Choice-based==
Options here depend on your choices made early in the game, which you can only change with [[Fate]], if at all.
* Your {{IL|Sign of the Chiropteromantic Zodiac:}} allows you to draw an associated card at {{IL|Mrs Plenty's Carnival}}, which on a rare success grants you the Second Chance associated with your sign. See [[Sign of the Chiropteromantic Zodiac:#Levels|here]] for details.
* The item you choose to receive on [[A Gift!]] from your {{IL|The Protégé of a Mysterious Benefactor|Appearance=Mysterious Benefactor}} will unlock the associated gain on the card [[A past benefactor]] later.
* If you have finished your [[Ambition]], all of the {{IL|The Rewards of Ambition|Appearance=Rewards of Ambition}} give 4 Second Chances, either 4 of the same type or 2 of one type and 2 of another. For specifics, check your specific ending in the article.
