Snippets of narrative text (e.g. story descriptions and the results of actions) must not exceed 250 characters in length, when quoted. This does not apply to game instructions, item descriptions, or access codes.

This is largely handled for you by the templates: they will warn you when over the character limit and only show the allowed number of characters. Using the Preview button will also show the current character count so you can revise before saving the page. Alternatively, you can use a third-party character counter, though its count may include characters that the templates ignore.

Note that game instructions (denoted in-game in bold, and in the wiki in the "Game Instructions" or "Success Instructions" fields) do not count against this limit, and do not need to be trimmed.

Please add […] (ellipsis character) or [...] (three dots) to denote trimmed passages. In other words, when you cut out words or sentences, put […] in its place. Otherwise the readers might not know that the article's text isn't the original version, which would be unfair to Fallen London's writers. A simple example: A decidedly incautious approach. A more chopped-up example: Making Your Name: Step into the ring and fight without mercy. You can add the ellipsis character easily with the template {{...}}.

Trim markers don't count towards the 250 character limit, so feel free to use as many as feels appropriate for each page. Italics, bold, and line breaks don't count either. Some qualities that are frequently used for variant text have their own placeholder templates to use within game text. For example, you can use {{Af}} to display [formal address] without cutting into available characters or removing context with […].

If you come across an article that has been edited without being properly trimmed, please trim it! Add [[Category:Trimmed]] afterwards so that wiki administrators can remove the over-length text from the page's history.
