Tilde for number ranges[edit]
Is this a British English thing or something? Just curious, I've never seen ~ used for ranges, the typographical convention (at least in American English) is to use an en dash 12–34. Pixie (talk) 06:40, 16 May 2025 (UTC)
- It's not a British English thing or anything, but the en dash is hard to differentiate from the hyphen without paying close attention, and isn't on many peoples' keyboards. A tilde is on most keyboards and is more visually distinct from the hyphen. All of this is to differentiate ranges from subtraction. While you can, I believe, always tell whether something is subtraction or a range from context, it makes it harder to read pages in some cases where there might be ambiguity at a glance. That's why I prefer to use ~ for ranges, though if there's a reason not to I'm very willing to hear you out ^^ JmeJuniper (talk) 07:40, 16 May 2025 (UTC)
