You're going to need a new hat-stand too, but at least you manage to dislodge the cat. It bounces once off your head, tearing open your scalp, then streaks out into the foggy night. You follow!

It isn't hard to follow the yowls and the occasional scream from an unlucky passer-by. Around the city you go, arriving eventually at the roughest market in Spite. Ragged stalls sell half-rotten fruit and meat that would gag a rat. The Starveling Cat has disappeared. But what's that you hear? Is it the distinctive clink of soul bottles?
