The route is being treated with the Viric Fixative to keep it stable. When you reach the heart of the Seventh Coil, a Xanthous Array connected to a Midnight Sounder acting as a contingency — not a "dead man's switch," never a dead man's switch — will fill it with light, and the Weeping Mercenary will lead the Tributes to safety. Since the Array cannot be powered for long, once you flee, the door to the coil will be shut with the help of a Sealing Insight.
