A bevy of rats dart to and fro carrying sand – but they are so small, the sand they throw does little. Hot coals have escaped. They must be doused before they cause a fire.

Success

Quick Thinking

Hoisted […] above the smelter is a barrel of water […] The rats can't just drop it on the loose coals – the rapid cooling might crack the smelter. But it can still be useful.

[…] you remove burning coals from the smelter, and tip them into the water barrel. […]

1"You in a fire brigade?" The Grizzled Gaffer is black with ash, and his whiskers are singes, but he is as calm as ever. "Or used to working with smelters?" He doesn't wait for your answer. He is expressing approval, not interest.
2For a moment, the Masterly Machinist is unrecognisable – he is coated, head to paw, in ash. He shakes himself off, like a dog after a swim. "Glad you were here." He bears his teeth in a grimace. "Now to find out why that even happened."
3The Eager Engineer is coated in coal dust […] only obvious from her pawprints. She wipes her face, then considers her filthy paw with disgust. "This is why we should encourage some rats to retire. Working here takes quick reactions. […] you've got them!"

Rare Success

Quick thinking, fast work

[…] a barrel of water […]

You untie the rope holding the barrel up […] you remove burning coals from the smelter, and tip them into the water barrel. Steam billows, but the smelter cools. The fire risk diminishes; the team sighs with relief.

1"Nice to see someone remembers their training." The Grizzled Gaffer is black with ash, and his whiskers are singed, but he is as stoical as ever. "It's not like it used to be, you know. Now, rats cut corners – left and right. They're as bad as.. mm."
2[…] the Masterly Machinist is unrecognisable – he is coated, head to paw, in ash. It is the Fore-Rat's cry of "'Arry?! Are you hurt?" that identifies him.

"I'm good, love. I'm good." The Machinist gestures […] "Thanks to this one's quick thinking."

3The Eager Engineer emerges from a gout of steam. "Bl__dy H—!"

"Language, young lady!" The Fore-Rat wipes away at the ash covering the Engineer, checking for injury. When satisfied, the Fore-Rat turns to you. "Thank you."

Failure

The wrong tool for the job

Hoisted almost directly above the smelter is a barrel of water used for humidifying cotton. The rats are too small to lower it safely, but you are ten times their size, […] You could topple the barrel of water and douse the coals in moments.

1The coals are cool, certainly, but for some reason the rats do not seem overly pleased […] "Why did you do that?" says the Grizzled Gaffer. "You can't cool it that fast! We'll need to check the whole thing for cracks, now. And repair the cotton system." […]
2[…] The Masterly Machinist whistles through his teeth. "Well, you've made a right mess. An' taken a good ten years off the life of the forge. You cool metal that quickly, it isn't happy. […] Please. Just go and... not do anything, for a bit."
3[…] the rats do not seem overly pleased […] "Wow!" says the Eager Engineer. "Wow." She covers her nose with her paws. "There is a reason we weren't using water. You cool metal that quickly, and it remembers. In the bad way. Ooh, Ma's going to be fuming!"
