Editing An Intimate of Devils and Selling Your Soul (Guide)

This guide is a combination of two smaller guides. The first section involves {{IL|An Intimate of Devils}}, an overview of the opportunity cards and the trick of {{FontRose}}. The second sections is a more generic guide to selling your soul.

==An Intimate of Devils==
An intimate of devils is a card based story which is usually the first way to reliably sell your soul. The story can only be completed once, either by selling your soul, or by manipulating your progress during {{FontRose}}.

The main way to start the story is to raise your {{Il|Renown: Hell}} to 5, e.g from the Carnival. This will allow you to draw [[A devil's taken a shine to you]].
Note that many or even most of the actions will affect your quirks, if that's something you care about.

If your intention is to sell your soul, you should just play any cards that come your way. If your intention is to trick the devils into leaving you alone by manipulating your story quality, you should still play the cards, except the final offer cards at the end. Once you reach {{IL|An Intimate of Devils}} 15, you should instead play [[Actually, you'll be meeting someone there]], until you reach An intimate 18. You should only attempt to get {{IL|An Intimate of Devils}} to 15 when the time of the year is actually approaching {{FontRose}}, as you can't normally advance {{IL|An Intimate of Devils}} past 17 without selling your soul; keeping {{IL|An Intimate of Devils}} low (0 - 5) however gives an easy and frequent source of Church Favours (at 0 - 3) or Hell Favours (at 2 - 5). Getting the quality that low however can be a tiresome affair if you made the mistake of building it up. The best way to lower it is to choose 'Decline' on either of the [[Abstraction?]] cards, or if you're already deep into the 'Sell your soul' stage (15+), then to throw out the Affectionate Devil on [[A serious offer - Devil ]] and then grind the quality back up to 12 - 14 before declining on [[Abstraction?]]; as grinding down from {{IL|An Intimate of Devils}} 8 is an annoying affair that gives lots of {{IL|Scandal}}.

Part of the intent of playing this storyline will probably be to lock yourself out of it, as you may only sell your soul this way once, even if you recover it.

As an alternative to all of this for those who don't want to have to wait all year for the {{FontRose}}, Staining your Soul through {{FontSMEN}} and notifying one of the Devils through their final card will wipe {{IL|An Intimate of Devils}} completely (albeit at the cost of all {{Il|Favours: Hell|Appearance=Hell Favours}}), and having a {{IL|Stain on Your Soul}} will prevent the quality from starting again through the card {{IL|A devil's taken a shine to you}}. The downside to this strategy however is of course actually playing through {{FontSMEN}}, but Seekers who wish to rid themselves of this irritating storyline can consider this a minor boon for them.

==Selling your Soul==
In addition to the story mentioned above, selling your soul can be done in several ways. It should be noted that your soul isn't very attractive if you have a {{IL|Stain on Your Soul}} or if you're {{IL|In Possession of a Peculiar Personal Enhancement -}}

===Pros and cons of having a soul===
Why would you want your soul, anyway?
*Several profitable {{IL|Term Passing...}} Storylets at the University require you to have your soul if you haven't proceeded too far in the story.
*Having your soul is required for [[Talk about something else|an option]] to increase {{IL|Counting the Days}}.
*Having your soul is required for parts of {{IL|Seeking Mr Eaten's Name}}. Furthermore, having lost a stained soul is problematic in the Forgotten Quarter.
*Being soulless adds a (bad) opportunity card in your deck ([[Where's my soul?]]).
*It opens up for you to sell it again!

Why would you want to stay Soulless?
*This stops you from drawing {{IL|An Intimate of Devils}} cards.
*This opens up [[You just put it down for a moment|an option]] on [[A Gift from the Capering Relicker]].
*During Christmas, [[The Way to Privilege|it may allow you to improve your lodgings]].

Actually selling your soul during An intimate of devils above requires you to fail a 90% luck check after playing a long series of opportunity cards, so unless you're desperately in need of {{IL|Devilbone Die|Appearance=Devilbone Dice}}, this probably won't be profitable. Both of these opportunities raise {{IL|An Intimate of Devils}} to 20, preventing you from selling your soul repeatedly. This also prevents the initial opportunity card to show up, which may be what you wanted all along...

===Seasonal===
*During Christmas (requires {{IL|Key to a Brass Embassy Guest Room}}):

*If you have completed [[A Trade in Souls]], you will be able to draw a new City Vices card, allowing you to sell your soul for a far more profitable price. This opportunity does not appear if you have a remote lodging. Using this option, selling your soul becomes very profitable, and selling it as {{IL|A Person of Some Importance -}} gains you a {{IL|Fabulous Diamond}}

==Regaining your soul==
There are a few ways to regain your soul.
You may either spend Fate on the [[Where's my soul?]] opportunity card, or you may start searching for bundles of oddities.
Bundles with a value of exactly 200 contains your soul. See [[Bundle of Oddities (Guide)]] for a comprehensive list of these. For the highest chance of retrieving your soul, the option should have a max value of as close as possible to 200, without being lower than that.

Some particularly useful options:
*[[Speak for a little while and ask them to disperse]] on the [[One's public]] Card (0.5% chance)
*[[Something on the doorstep?]] from [[Visitors at Hallowmas]] Card (0.5% chance), obviously requires Hallowmas
*[[Trade favours with urchins]] in the Flit for 3 {{IL|Favours: Urchins}} (0.43% chance)
**The best way to grind Urchin Favours is to play Opportunity Cards. The most frequent card aside from the faction card is {{IL|What will you do with your Grubby Kitten?|Appearance=the Urchin's Connected Pet card}}. 3 cards are gained by owning the {{IL|Grubby Urchin}}, {{IL|Malevolent Monkey}}, and {{IL|Winsome Dispossessed Orphan}} companions. You may also burn 3 {{IL|Favours: Criminals|Appearance=Criminal Favours}} through [[Arson and avarice]] on the Opportunity Card [[An Implausible Penance]] to gain 1 Urchin Favour alongside other rewards.
***If you wish to grind out favours through actions rather than cards, the {{IL|A Boxful of Intrigue (Guide)|Appearance=Boxful of Intrigue Carousel}}; a 14-action minimum carousel; also has the option to payout in an Urchin Favour alongside other rewards. Late-game players with a Parabolan Base-Camp and access to {{IL|Ealing Gardens}} can repeatedly hunt a {{IL|Honey-Mazed Bear}} through a {{IL|The Bear, Again|Appearance=card drawn in Ealing Gardens}} for 1 Favour.
*[[Give with one hand, take with the other]] from [[A squire of the Flit]] Card drawn in the Flit (0.43% chance)
*Several options from [[The Ragman's barge]], a redirect from [[Wolfstack in the fog]], a Card drawn in Wolfstack Docks (>0.3-0.2% chance)
