The Midnight Trade is a carousel in The Midnight Moon wherein you work as a Candle-Man repairing aircraft, hauling supplies, lighting safe paths, and enforcing the rules of the Midnight Moon.

How to unlock[edit]

Even if you're not interested in the carousel, taking the actions to unlock it is worthwhile, as you receive a Whaletallow Taper, an Adornment item that raises Monstrous Anatomy. Also, if you want the Midnight Moon as your Profile Page Header, you'll need to progress through the story and complete at least one shift.

Progress the Firmament story to Firmament 198/ Upon the Belly of the Whale 10 first.

You'll then need to raise Labour By Candlelight: from the Spire, Inn, Leviathan storylet, watch for the Midnight Moon's secrets and then spend 50 to ask some pointed questions about candle-bearers. Play the The Lights of the Candle-Men storylet. You need any one of these to proceed:

If you can't manage any of the first four prerequisites, you can purchase the last one for 2000 Stuivers.

Once you've done a round of The Midnight Trade, you'll get to know Old Resurrection and start building a Roof-spanning trading network.

Progress[edit]

Two options appear on The Midnight Trade storylet depending on two randomisers, Airs of the Leviathan and Smuggled Airs. Most are combined checks with one primary stat/skill plus Inerrant or Neathproofed adding additional points of the primary. You can use the Outfit Planner to determine the best outfit for such combined challenges. Two additional checkless options providing Tempestuous Tales are available with FEAST OF THE ROSE companions

Progress is made whether you succeed or fail, but failures slightly raise Nightmares or Wounds. Every option also rerolls both Airs.

The carousel can be left and resumed any time.

If the options are not to your liking, Smuggled Airs may be rerolled at Spire, Inn, Leviathan with Look up and Keep an eye on imports and exports, and Airs of the Leviathan can be rerolled by examining the leviathan on the same storylet. Smuggled Airs can also be rerolled with the Keep an ear open option on Beneath the Sign of the Midnight Moon, but this will accrue Nightmares as well, which probably defeats the purpose of rerolling outside The Midnight Trade.

Rewards[edit]

At Peligin Work 5, you can end your shift to get the rewards:

Discounting Menaces accrued from failures, the rewards of this activity are valued at E 27.05 per round, for an EPA of 4.51. Note however that Stuivers are difficult to convert into Echoes without significant losses, and vice-versa. The breakdown of rewards is E 12 + 301, or 2 EPA + 50.2 StPA.

If a player is only interested in acquiring currency, they could obtain both more echoes and more Stuivers by splitting their actions between the Stacks and a high-return Upper River activity like Moulin or the Tracklayer City. However, this activity is likely more efficient for directly acquiring Memory of Moonlight and Ascended Ambergris compared to purchasing them with Stuivers, the latter of which is needed to obtain equipment in Hallow's Throat.
