This is a combined guide of the storyline of A Survivor of the Affair of the Box, as well as A Boxful of Intrigue, a carousel unlocked with A Survivor of the Affair of the Box 12

A Survivor of the Affair of the Box[edit]



A Survivor of the Box starts in Spite with A Name Whispered in Darkness 3. You will be able to find the box and gain A Survivor of the Affair of the Box 1

The Flit[edit]


The story continues in The Flit, where you discover that you're not the only one interested in the Box. The box also seems to contain some Shard of Glim. Eventually, you will increase A Survivor of the Affair of the Box to 5.

Mahogany Hall[edit]


Unlocked with Tales of Mahogany Hall is a storylet that lets you remember the story and find the box again if you've lost it.

Further options will unlock with Tales of Mahogany Hall up to 14. Eventually you'll discover that the key to the box is carried by some of the performers, and you'll need to increase Tales of Mahogany Hall up to 22 in order to get the key. This should set your A Survivor of the Affair of the Box to 12-14, at which point you can progress.

Back to Spite[edit]


Starting at A Survivor of the Affair of the Box 12, several options open up in Spite. In this section, you will learn what is in the box and you will also find some information that you can use to blackmail the Masters of the Bazaar.

All options for A Survivor of the Affair of the Box 12-51 require A Boxful of Intrigue 13, unless noted in footnotes below.

A Boxful of Intrigue[edit]


In the following table, any success that follows your side provides Empire's Kingmaker, which is needed for one of the rewards. Any success on the opposing side changes your side and gives you A Turncoat. This is a menace that will cost favours to reduce, once it reaches 4. This should be avoided. For the most profit, it is advisable to side with the Conscience of Empire, aka common-folk, as this provides an additional 6 x Correspondence Plaque.

The storylets generally have broad Shadowy 130 checks, so you would need Shadowy to be at 217 to play them at a 100% chance of success. They give different menaces on failures, as noted by the table. This is a reasonable way to grind Shadowy at higher levels.

The whole carousel takes 14 actions to get through.
