Bazaar Companions (Guide)

From Fallen London Wiki
Ladybonessmall.png Early MYN Content and Onwards

There are a host of Companions available in Fallen London, and indeed three of the shops in the Bazaar sell Companions (although one is Fate-locked). While you can see their price, description, and stats through the shop interface, what you don't see is whether there are any additional advantages to being accompanied by any of these. This page addresses that need, listing various repeatable activities that require these Companions.

Summary[edit]

In general, it is worth having one of most Companions as this unlocks various options. This will greatly depend on whether you can easily afford them of course, so you'll want to start with the cheaper Companions. An overall assessment of which ones are most useful follows below. This is subjective, and your individual goals may lead you to a different opinion.

Fish gold.png

Cheerful Goldfish[edit]

A very cheap addition to your roster, this little fellow reduces Nightmares. Equip it before playing Dream opportunity cards, for example, to reduce your Menace build-up.

A Cheerful Goldfish can then give you 2 x Piscine Research when you are performing research with an Ichthyological Focus in your University Laboratory. This consumes your Cheerful Goldfish.

In Fallen London, you can spend Cheerful Goldfish to:

In Parabola, you can spend Cheerful Goldfish to:

Weasel.png

Lucky Weasel[edit]

Allows you to take part in City Vices: a tournament of weasels! (an unusual-frequency opportunity card in Fallen London). With a Lucky Weasel, you have a 30% chance of success.

When you have reached A Name Scrawled in Blood 2, you will unlock Business on Watchmaker's Hill in Watchmaker's Hill. When The Airs of London are 0-25 and you Encounter: an enthusiastic outing, a Lucky Weasel can win you 36-45 x Moon-Pearl.

In The Flit, you can Entertain the Topsy King by attempting to Pull your Lucky Weasel from a hat. Success gives you 70 x Rat on a String, but failure will lose your Lucky Weasel.

If you have 400 Lucky Weasels, you'll draw the opportunity card You Appear to Have Purchased an Extraordinary Number of Weasels. This will grant you the special accomplishment A Weaseller.

In Fallen London, you can spend Lucky Weasels to:

In a slow boat passing a dark beach on a silent river, you can spend Lucky Weasels to:

In Parabola, you can spend Lucky Weasels to:

Reprehensible Lizard[edit]

Owning a Reprehensible Lizard will add a standard-frequency card to your Fallen London opportunity deck: Lizardly matters. This has a 60% chance of success, giving: x 1 Confident Smile, -1 CP Nightmares, and a 1.75 E profit in items. This is generally not considered to be valuable.

At Mrs Plenty's Carnival in The games tent, a Reprehensible Lizard lets you try Lizard Throwing which gives you a 50% chance to win a Sulky Bat (or, on a rare success, 3 x Sulky Bat and 1 x Sapphire).

In The Flit, when investigating Bats and Cats, a Reprehensible Lizard lets you Try intercepting some bats through which you can gain a Sulky Bat (as well as advance the storyline).

A Reprehensible Lizard can then give you 3 x Amphibian Research when you are performing research with an Herpetological Focus in your University Laboratory. This consumes your Reprehensible Lizard.

In Parabola, you can spend Reprehensible Lizards to:

Bat.png

Sulky Bat[edit]

Owning a Sulky Bat will add a standard-frequency card to your Fallen London opportunity deck: A Parliament of Bats. With this, you can try to gain a Bat with Attitude (either through a rare success of about 5% probability, or by spending 100 x Sulky Bat to guarantee it). It also has a valuable option to spend 1 x Vision of the Surface (worth 0.50 E ) to gain 1 x Favours: The Great Game.

In The Flit, you can Entertain the Topsy King by attempting to Make your Sulky Bat disappear. Success gives you a Bundle of Oddities, but failure will lose your Sulky Bat.

In Godfall, when the Airs of Godfall are 0-40, you can Loose your Sulky Bat to gain Progress of a Pilgrimage and St Stalactite's Favour (see: Pilgrimages in Godfall (Guide)).

In Ealing Gardens, at Licensed by Mr Hearts, you can use a Sulky Bat to gain 2 x Bat Wing (which may or may not use up the Sulky Bat depending on your approach).

In Fallen London, you can spend Sulky Bats to:

In a slow boat passing a dark beach on a silent river, you can spend Sulky Bats to:

Rat.png

Talkative Rattus Faber[edit]

The Talkative Rattus Faber gives -25 to each of your main Attributes. Why would you want that? Well, you gain more CP in levelling an Attribute when it is lower, so if you can reduce your Attribute artificially then you can increase it faster (see: Leveling (Guide)). The Weasel of Woe is more effective at this, but the Talkative Rattus Faber is significantly cheaper.

If you have completed Sartorial squeamishness, then having all three of Talkative Rattus Faber, Working Rat, Rattus Faber Bandit-Chief opens a story in Your Lodgings: A night-time conference. See: Seeking the Meaning of the Plaster Face (Guide).

In Watchmaker's Hill, one of the rat companions can be used for Stealth watch repair, a standard-frequency opportunity card. Each rat has a different test.

Araby Fighting-Weasel[edit]

Allows you to take part in City Vices: a tournament of weasels! (an unusual-frequency opportunity card in Fallen London). With an Araby Fighting-Weasel, you have a 70% chance of success.

When you have reached A Name Scrawled in Blood 2, you will unlock Business on Watchmaker's Hill in Watchmaker's Hill. When The Airs of London are 0-25 and you Encounter: an enthusiastic outing, an Araby Fighting-Weasel can win you 46-55 x Moon-Pearl.

In Fallen London, you can spend Araby Fighting-Weasels to:

During Hallowmas, an Araby Fighting-Weasel can be upgraded to an Ermine Assassin.

Raven.png

Dazed Raven Advisor[edit]

Owning a Dazed Raven Advisor will add a standard-frequency card to your Fallen London opportunity deck: A kindness of ravens. Amongst other options, with this card you can:

It should be noted that the Ravens do not have any uses for anything, and are inferior companions despite costing so much more than more readily available ones that give better stat bonuses.

Mandrake.png

Deshrieked Mandrake[edit]

Owning a Deshrieked Mandrake will add a standard-frequency card to your Fallen London opportunity deck: The song of the Mandrake. This has a 60% chance of success, giving: x 1 Confident Smile, -1 CP Nightmares, and a 1.75 E profit in items. This is generally not considered to be valuable.

Spider.png

Fairly Tame Sorrow-Spider[edit]

Owning a Fairly Tame Sorrow-Spider will add a standard-frequency card to your Fallen London opportunity deck: Spiders and flies. This has a 60% chance of success, giving: x 1 Sudden Insight, -1 CP Wounds, and a 1.75 E profit in items. This is generally not considered to be valuable.

In The Blind Helmsman, you can spend A Night at the Spider Pits. Rather than betting on another spider, you can use your own Fairly Tame Sorrow-Spider. The expected payoff is poor (0.04 E ), unless you also have Arachnologist 2, in which case this is the best option here (0.36 E ) but still low.

In Fallen London, you can spend Fairly Tame Sorrow-Spiders to:

Rat2.png

Working Rat[edit]

Owning both a Working Rat and a Ratskin Suit will add a standard-frequency card to your Fallen London opportunity deck: Sartorial squeamishness. This cannot be discarded. Either you must get sell the rat or the suit, or you can gain Sympathetic about Ratly Concerns which opens up an additional storyline (and this card will not appear again)...

Monkey.png

Malevolent Monkey[edit]

Owning a Malevolent Monkey will add a very infrequent card to your Fallen London opportunity deck: The Honey-Addled Monkey. Amongst other options, with this card you can:

If you also own a Grubby Urchin, owning a Malevolent Monkey will add a very infrequent card to your Fallen London opportunity deck: The Urchin and the Monkey. This has various options, one of which grants Favours: Urchins.

During the Feast of the Exceptional Rose, a Malevolent Monkey can be upgraded to a Pentecost Ape.

During Christmas, a Malevolent Monkey can be converted to a Dark-Carapaced Crustacean by feeding it an Unusual Pail of So-Called Snow.

Ratmasked.png

Rattus Faber Bandit-Chief[edit]

If you have completed Sartorial squeamishness, then having all three of Talkative Rattus Faber, Working Rat, Rattus Faber Bandit-Chief opens a story in Your Lodgings: A night-time conference. See: Seeking the Meaning of the Plaster Face (Guide).

In Watchmaker's Hill, one of the rat companions can be used for Stealth watch repair, a standard-frequency opportunity card. Each rat has a different test.

Midnightmatriarch.png

Midnight Matriarch[edit]

A Midnight Matriarch can give you 5 x Laboratory Research when you are performing research to Find a Route to Parabola in your University Laboratory.

If you also own a Scuttering Squad, owning a Midnight Matriarch will add an unusual-frequency card to your Fallen London opportunity deck: Like rats and cats which cannot be discarded. This is a very bad card; it either loses 100 Memories of Light or doubles your Scandal level.

Sidebarplaguedbyapopularsong.png

Weasel of Woe[edit]

The Weasel of Woe gives -300 to each of your main Attributes and -10 to all Advanced Skills. Why would you want that? Well, you gain more CP in levelling an Attribute when it is lower, so if you can reduce your Attribute artificially then you can increase it faster (see: Leveling (Guide)). Moreover, the Weasel of Woe lowers your main Attributes so much that negative opportunity cards caused by posession of an Eyeless Skull are discarded.

Equipping a Weasel of Woe sets the Woeful quality. This is used to prevent certain options appearing, so that the Weasel's properties can't be exploited. It also adds two abundant frequency cards to your Fallen London opportunity deck: A Dream of Claws and A Dream of Teeth, both of which increase Nightmares.

If you have 400 Weasels of Woe, you'll draw the opportunity card You Appear to have Purchased an Extraordinary Number of Weasels of Woe. This will grant you the special accomplishment A Woeseller.

Tiger.png

Bengal Tigress[edit]

During Hallowmas, a Bengal Tigress can be upgraded to an Extravagantly Titled Tigress.

In Parabola, you can spend Bengal Tigresses to:

Overgoat.png

Overgoat[edit]

The Overgoat has a much higher stat bonus ( Watchful +20) than any other non-Fate Companion (at most +10). Even Fate-locked Companions are rarely higher than +10, with only two non-goat exceptions at +11 and +12. It also has a correspondingly ridiculously-high cost of 11,712.80 E .

All fear the Overgoat! is a standard-frequency opportunity card in Fallen London, unlocked with Watchful 100. Owning a goat unlocks additional options on this card, including:

  • A pair of Overgoats can be upgraded to one Übergoat at the cost of 1 FATE. An Übergoat grants Watchful +30 (as well as BDR +4).

Owning an Overgoat (or Übergoat or Heptagoat) will add a standard-frequency card to your Adulterine Castle opportunity deck: Caprine Authority.

Redemptions[edit]

Pirategreen.png

Devious Henchman[edit]

In the Cave of the Nadir, a Devious Henchman can be upgraded to a Ravenous Henchman.

Urchin.png

Grubby Urchin[edit]

Owning a Grubby Urchin will add a very infrequent card to your opportunity deck that's only drawn in your lodgings: Your Grubby Urchin is becoming troublesome. This has various options, one of which grants Favours: Urchins. If you also own a Malevolent Monkey, owning a Grubby Urchin will add a very infrequent card to your Fallen London opportunity deck: The Urchin and the Monkey. This has various options, one of which grants Favours: Urchins.

You can spend Grubby Urchins to:

Once you gain access to a University Laboratory, you can put your Grubby Urchin to work there without losing his item. You probably won't find much use for him there though until you're advanced enough to require a source of Parabolan Research.

During Hallowmas, a Grubby Urchin unlocks an option to gain a Relict Catapult (a Watchful +9, Shadowy +9 Weapon).

Starryeyedscoundrel.png

Starry-Eyed Scoundrel[edit]

During Hallowmas, a Starry-Eyed Scoundrel can be upgraded to a Silver-Eyed Scoundrel.

During Hallowmas, a Winsome Dispossessed Orphan can be upgraded to a Dutiful Orphan or an Unforgiving Urchin.
