It's monstrously time consuming to get all the materials needed to buy this. In comparison you are likely to have found many Breath Of The Voids before even becoming A Person Of Some Importance.
The only other (non GCO) way to get this is trading in 3200 scraps, which is a steep cost, requiring the equivalent of 128 Urchin favours. Are you thinking of a Night-Whisper perhaps?

Yes you can. Get 3200 scraps and trade them with the Shivering Relicker. You could do this multiple times before any other source is available. The POINT was that you have a source for this that doesn't cost a whole bunch of INCREDIBLY OBSCURE and difficult to obtain materials. Scrap is common and since the only reason to get something like this intentionally is to have one of everything for your collection, you would ALREADY HAVE one of these LONG ago. The railroad is so hellish to break into at all that you are almost certainly a Paramount Presence before even getting to Jericho. I was one before getting to Ealing. It took so long that I HAVE bought more than one of these before reaching Ealing because I got that much scrap. It's not like there's anything else to do with scrap but buy one of the 3200 scrap goodies.
Scrap may be convenient if you already have a lot of it accumulated, but actively grinding it out would take much longer than getting a Breath this way. Outside of grinding Urchin favours via Affair of the Box, the main way to get Certifiable Scraps is through lodgings cards, but they are so inefficient that many players won't use those actions - even more so, now that lodgings can be lent out to remove their cards. Personally, as someone who's played the game for several years and who actually played most lodging cards, despite their inefficiency, I had nowhere near enough Scrap to get a Breath from the Relicker by the time I reached Moulin. I think you may be overestimating how common it is.
Small addition: there are like seven or so cards that give Urchin favors for 1 action, the Affair is not the only repeatable source. FWIW, I didn't find the Railroad terrible to break into. I have been playing for close to a year. During that time, I have developed my Railroad up to Station VIII finished my Ambition (which only took so long because I waited until December to get an expensive Lodging) have gotten a 5 card-lodging (this makes grinding scraps easier) the Ambition also required me to get an Intriguer's Compendium, which requires 680 Scraps. I think I purposefully grinded like 150 of those via favors and cards? Took me probably a month, not all of which I was farming. Still, 5 scraps per day sounds more than realistic. With this calculation, you could probably get 3200 within 640 days (21 month-ish). I should also note my Urchin Renown was barely levelled. If you level that, it will slow you down I am on my way to becoming a Paramount Presence and will probably get at least my second Innard within the month. I think it is very possible to finish the Railroad within one and a half years or so, OR use roughly that time for the 3200 scraps. However! It may have been different back in the day, with less efficient grinds for basically everything. We all enjoy the game in different ways, and none is less valid than the other :)
If your a paramount presence before Ealing, you have been playing this game since before 2020(Probably even 2019), and grinds have changed so much that playing lodging cards feels like burning an action with no point. Personal experience for myself as someone who played from January 2020, I reached 3200 scrap sometime after I reached Moulin... so I could cash in for the Veils-Velvet Scrap. And that wasn't a passive grind. (Also it is 384 urchin favours and 128 actions to cash it in for all the scrap). Also you need 200 Watchful for BotV for scrap (While yes modified), if you have 200 watchful and getting a T8 (or even more than one) while refusing to increase to person of importance, you are 100% purposely stalling for no reason.
I also disagree with the initial comment. As a player who began the journey over a year ago and have avoided grinding any one particular resource i got at that moment 800 plus scraps - anywhere near the void requirements. However when you play this game as intended and venture into each avenue of Fallen London, if you follow the golden mini stories to their ends you discover sources (also thanks to this wiki ;-) of many expensive items to upconvert them later. As for the railway, i got to hurlers within a year without much focusing only on the railway. Made a few skeletons in the bone market for bessemer steel, played university, went somewhere new and the progress was pleasingly paced for me to discover the story of each station and to do another skeleton or brawl in the docks for coins. All in all, if you play your cards well (wink,wink) you can enjoy Fallen London without much of grinding.
as someone who done both grinds, farming the items for this option takes less than a week for an endgame character, while farming scraps takes at least a month. this is a no-brainer
Also weighing in: currently, the only reason you need a Breath of the Void is for an option in London's Marrow. There are four major 3200-scrap items needed for that option: Breath of the Void, the Rumourmonger's Network, Veils-Velvet Scrap, and the Reported Location of a One-Time Prince of Hell. Each also has at least one alternative way to get the item. Rumourmonger requires identity-crafting (not too bad), Reported Location can be gotten a LOT of ways actually (probably because it has several alternative uses), Void's option is here, and the Velvet's option is Discordant Studies (with uses in an ambition and in SMEN). Why on EARTH would you spend scraps on any of the other 3 when the Velvet's alternative is so costly?
You need Breath of the Void for a piece of Discordant Studies.
This is one of the worst FL takes I've ever heard in my life. I'm not going to lie, I typed a far lengthier comment beforehand and accidentally closed the tab, so I'm going to summarize my findings. Getting a BOTV with scrap takes a bit over 500 actions using cards, and around 5200 without. 3 of these items can be obtained through ratket, making them around 80 actions apiece, crafting a cart hoard takes around 80-90 actions or less with hephaesta, and the surmise takes about as long. This comes out to around 340 actions. Sure, these materials are obscure, but they're actually remarkably easy to obtain. 3 ratket, 2 lab. "The railroad is so hellish to break into at all that you are almost certainly a Paramount Presence before even getting to Jericho. I was one before getting to Ealing." Is one of the most nonsensical things I have ever heard. Using generous estimates, PP takes ~7000 actions to achieve (a little over 2k for wealth, a little over double that for ubergoat, marriage and influence for the last 2), WITHOUT counting any actions used to gain notability. Starting the RW takes 7 society favours, 200e worth of scrip, or is potentially free depending on ambition, and getting to jericho assuming ~5bsi/action will take <500. Considering that there is a 1-2 week delay between getting to ealing and getting to jericho, this is completely reasonable. Someone else mentioned it took them a year and a half to complete the railroad. (to be clear: i am not trying to flex, merely trying to ensure accurate estimations of these things can be made) I started my railroad on March 16, 2022, and completed my final meeting on July 4th 2022. This is 110 days, less than 4 months. I was already done with my ambition, and was able to focus almost all of my actions (exceptional stories are too fun to pass up on, though) on getting through the railway and enjoying the stories at each location. I didn't rush anything, or do any insanely efficient things- hell, I stopped at the impossible block to go grind an IE. And even given that, it took me less than four months. In conclusion, L+ratio.
I will also note that 3/5 can also be obtained reasonably easy through Cover Identities, if you don't want to wait for the rat market to 1/16 pick the right one. Since cartographer's hoards are reasonably easy to obtain through the lab even for non-LF players, that leaves the Coruscating Soul as the hardest piece to obtain, requiring either 1/16 Rat Market or a large variety of souls.
yeah totally, when I was getting my BOTV for [redacted] I didn't get anything from RM. coruscating from museum of souls, edicts and cart hoard from lab, LC from clay highwayman heist, and surmise from nonspecific academic. There are several extremely valid choices for all of these. |

"transgender, or transhuman?" yes. but really, there's a really palpable versimilitude to this sort of slow, plodding, piecemeal transformation into a greater and better-fitting self. the prosthetics that function as a temporary relief for all the things that haven't grown in properly yet. the timeline, where one can notice hints of changes but one still isn't quite where one wants to be; but also, the way one's endocrine system is the first to respond to these changes. and the gentle guidance through cultural experiences that one missed out on through the circumstances of one's birth. also, the way the bargain provides both all the resources to pursue social transition immediately (while still leaving the option to don one's baggiest hoodie and humanmode) and all the resources to begin the process of pursuing physical transition feels really, really nice. a wrinkle in the ointment that also feels all too real, though, is the exact way in which others go out of their way to pay lip service to the concept of respecting one's identity, and superficially go through the motions, while not actually putting in the work to be respectful in practice. the way one needs to go just as much out of one's way to get invited to the masters' conclaves as any other londoner is rather telling, and there's a lot of parallels i can draw to my own experiences. finally, as someone very very nonbinary, i'm taking every little insinuation about curatorial anatomy and absolutely, wholeheartedly rolling with it. my gender now |

THE CHECKLIST -> 1 of each coral (or 3 of each coral if you want cosmetic copies of the same item) -> All the equipment listed in the above Wiki -> Either 1 storylet quality, or 5* the storylet quality if you think you’ll get an extra bonus; or 0 if you think it's a vanity quality and can't be bothered to get it. As of 9 Sept there are people quite confident it's just vanity and others that it's a unique item. -> favours to get a new ship (max needed 2000, the trade-in value of your current vessel is considered, you don't need a ship to buy one but presumably must be POSI, you can only have one ship still) -> favours to buy other old festival items (max 2000 needed, max cost per item is 250 favours)
DIVING FOR EQUIPMENT STRATEGY: It's minutely better to target lower depth items first; because if you are "forced" to dive deeper when you get a poor draw, you might come across a more rare item at the next depth. For that reason I'd start with corals, then Wrecking boots+ Nuncian Watch, then Effluvia + Mary Lloyd, and target the Scrimshander last.
2) 8 devotion depth 2, if not then “reroll” 90% to depth 3 until Wrecking boots + Nuncian watch (or maybe devotion 9 for Nuncian watch if it's really evading you). Pick up max favours if you can’t find them. 3) 10 devotion depth 4 until Mary Lloyd + Effluvia; if at depth 4 you get terrible pickings, go depth 5 and maybe pick up Scrimshander instead; if it’s horrific (<300 favours) you can always get the storylet quality. 4) 11 devotion depth 5 until Scrimshander (worst case do storylet or pick up max favours if you don't see it)
5a) The expected return optimal strategy = Devotion 9 = 15.4 FPA. Target the Effluvia at depth 3, if not target 300 at depth 4, if not go depth 5, you drown 13% of the time. The highest FPA although also the most drowny. 5b) 10 devotion depth 3-5 = 14.6 FPA. Target 300 favours at depth 3 or 4; if not go do depth 5. You drown 8% of the time. Or you can ignore 300 favours and dive always to depth 5 for 14.7 FPA and drowning 10% of the time. 5c) 11 devotion, 14.3 FPA, 0% drowning. Why we "save" the collecting the storylet quality is because during favour grinding we will probably reach depth 5, and at that point you might get a horrific draw. You can avoid this unluckiness by taking the storylet at that point. In a reply below I go into more detail of the math. The boost to FPA is greatest for the 11 devotion grind where you'll be at depth 5 100% of the time (as opposed to the 9 devotion grind where you'll be at depth 5 9% of the time); and the FPA boost to the 11 devotion grind depends on the amount of times you intend to dive/collect stories and will probably be in the range of +0.1 to +0.8 for most ppl.
You could also aim to get 900 tales of terror -> 180 extraordinary implications --> 35 uncanny incunabulum --> 6400 rat shillings --> 6250 amanita sherry --> 1250 brilliant souls --> A guest room at the Brass Embassy. 25 actions upconvert to uncannies, 32 actions to get shillings = 57 actions outside the festival. Due to rounding you need 900 tales; but you'll have 5 implications, 3 uncannies and 150 rat shillings left over.
VS you'd get 5 tales of terror per action; 50 actions to reach 250 tales of terror, 5 actions to upconvert to 50 extraordinary implications (+2 actions of getting back the uni reputation); then 2 actions to upconvert to 10 uncannies (and an action to get uni reputation) then 10 actions to convert to 2000 rat shillings = 2000 partial maps -> 420 Zee-stories in 4 extra upconverting actions; so you get 20 extra Zee-stories plus tales of terror method is 74 actions instead of 80; PLUS you get 5 strangling absinthes, 54-114 making waves and other minor bonuses of nevercold brass, rare successes, and I overbudgeted uni reputation so it's probably an action less. There are Flask of Abominable Salts costs of uni reputation; but I think at least for the stats here, it's not going to change the story. Nb pls note Rat market only accepts Uncanny Incunabulum from 3 November so it is a bit of a wait to cash in / convert...

Just because Felix has consistently spat up rat pups after he found the local LB-Warrens doesn't make him a menace! It simply puts his honorable yet playful nature on full display. Why, ever since my Emerine Assassin, Fritz met him, Felix has learned how to safely play with his food. I remember one time when Felix was tarred and feathered by the time I got him out. My urchin had to spend 12 Echos buying Jones’ Salt Weasel Shampoo and another two on some gloves for bathing Felix. Nowadays, however, he and Fritz can clear a warren in just two minutes and 14 seconds. Felix doesn't even get hit by LB muskets. Truly a talented weasel.

Putting aside what options the game itself is equipped to provide us, and just talking in terms of theoretical canon-compliance... well, this is the Neath, and the point of the Neath is to be a refuge for the audacious and the impossible. So if we wanted to resurrect the Curator formerly known as Candles, how would we go about it? 1) There are apparently still some physical remains of Mr Candles. The path of Seeking Mr Eaten's Name disregards this completely, mentioning it early but then never doing anything about it; the feverish mission of SMEN is one of remembrance or retribution, not of resurrection. And yet. "IT IS NORTH UNDER GRANITE." Probably in Xibalba, if you have a skilled enough archeologist to go dig it up. Of course, that'll still be just a corpse. 2) The vitality of the Mountain of Life, combined with the blood of a Curator and a number of specially-prepared candles, can wake the dead, even those who have been dead for quite some time. We know this textually. The only problem is that, in the example we have, something is lost. To get Mr Candles back, we'd have to recover that "something". But in his case... it may be lost, but it's not gone. 3) The living regrets of the Bazaar, in which Mr Candles was drowned, still denote him homeopathically, if you've got a good enough Correspondent to read him back out of the lacre. Even if "lacre cannot bury the law", the railway to Hell uncovered something that can; a Steward's help may also be necessary, but there are Stewards around. I suspect, though, that this will be an incomplete remnant - filtered through the melancholy of the Bazaar's liquid sorrow. We'll need another flavor to balance it out. 4) Every human who posed a mortal threat to a Curator - whether October or the various Ambition protagonists - did it in Parabola; the Masters are vulnerable to it, and to the possibility of part of themselves being left behind there. Parabola was Mr Candles's _specialty_, once upon a time, and thus, some impression of him apparently remains there, or else wouldn't people dream of Death by Water. Get a good enough Glassworker to find the center of that dream, and I bet you'll find something suitable for the job. On its own, it's probably the vengeful aspect of Mr Eaten, which seems to play tug-of-war against the mournful aspect in the canonical Seeking Road. But even then, there's still a problem: you've got these remnants of Mr Candles's heart and mind, and you've got his body coming back to life... but how do you put them together again? 5) One of the impossible colors of the Neath has a tendency to lubricate thoughts and memories - to make them slippery, easy to slip in and out of minds. Going to the Nadir would be the wrong move here, I think; it's too hard to control the effects down there, too easy to lose all the precious ingredients that took so much effort to gather. Instead, you'd need measured, expert application of Irrigo. Would the help of a Midnighter, with their experience in the rites of St Joshua, be enough? Perhaps. Or perhaps one would have to lean, just a little, on the Seeking Road, to lure St Eruzile's irrigo-drenched remnant out of hiding. She would know. Is that enough? Maybe there's some hitches in the plan that I haven't yet noticed. Maybe the candles and the blood should be counted as their own steps. Maybe we shouldn't get so excited about sevens. But there's something there. Something that might end better than the Seeking Road and its apparent (at least, to me, who has no idea what's _really_after King of Ways) end goal of "getting revenge by calling the cops". |

Interetingly, this used to be called "Outlandish Artefact"; believe the name was changed within the past year (after Jan. 2019.) I am curious -- in a good way -- about the name change.
The name was changed two days ago. See patch notes. (Archivist's Note: The relevant patch notes: 24th January Version Version 3.19.26 The Outlandish Artefact item has been updated, and is now the Unprovenanced Artefact. The old version approached imperialism in a tongue-in-cheek way that was nonetheless exoticising. This is no longer our preferred approach to depictions of colonialism, and in addition this quality is about to serve a bigger and more involved role in content, so it felt appropriate to amend its description to fit that new role.)
I'm a non-white person from a post-British-colonial country and while I'm of the opinion that in real life, colonialism was horrible and that a lot of stolen stuff sitting in European museums should be returned to their countries of origin, and that a lot of fantasy fiction and historical fiction by Western authors treats this issue far too lightly and disrespectfully, and I get that the Failbetter people are trying to do the right thing......... I also think changing the name of this item was kind of a waste of time. For me, the original name of "outlandish" allowed it to exist in the fantasy bubble of FL; changing it to "unprovenanced" actually dragged in the real life issue of GIVE US OUR STUFF BACK DAMNIT in a disturbing way. The colonialists brainwashed us into thinking that Britain and especially England was some super cool awesome place. As a full grown adult I know that's not the case. But let me have my fantasy version of England, please.

Yup. As per usual, you have a bunch of white Anglos proclaiming themselves the saviours of the oppressed and ironically, imposing their voices and opinions over those of, you know, actual non-white people (of which there were quite a few on the forum thread expressing their disagreement with the change).
I have the same feeling as Wriothesley about "outlandish". This is Fallen London - the old version could well have been taken from Parabola, from the Forgotten Quarter after the old owners perished, or simply be an absurd fake! Until the description changed, there was no reason to think it was a pre-Fall artifact (and in fact, the rather low price implies it wasn't). So this doesn't feel like redressing a wrong, it rather feels like creating one in order to condemn it. Especially when (unlike some descriptions, I admit) the game lampshaded the problem rather well with the old text.

It feels stale and dry and trite, as opposed to the original description which was witty in that unique Fallen London style.
Just to add a dissenting voice to the conversation, I think the change was good. As someone who never experienced the old version of this item in-game, I was very pleased with the emphasis that "unprovenanced" placed on the shadiness of my dealings, and I think that flavour contributes more to the overall flavour of the bone-market and railway than "outlandish" ever did. While some people obviously liked the tone of old fallen london, I think we can all agree that the quality of what we're getting now is dramatically better than it used to be. We can speculate about the reasons behind the change to this specific item and the higher level creative changes about the company, but ultimately we don't know the exact reasoning behind every creative decision and shouldn't act like we do. |

What does the Flavour text mean?
Probably yet another reference to T.S Eliot's works (like many others in Fallen London).
The birthmark itself is a euphemism. It's a hickey that one of the Masters left you the first time you entered your spire. Well, okay, it's also a bite mark, but still. You just donated a fair amount of blood, though the game is cagey about admitting this. The fact that this apparently will never fully heal is its own fun lore implication. The quote in the flavour text is from "The Hollow Men", specifically the final stanza, titled, "For Thine is the Kingdom" -- both of which bear at least superficial similarities to your physical state and your ascent to one of the highest places London can offer you.

It's difficult to see with how shrunken it is, but the image is the Bazaar silhouetted against the Sun. The art itself likely comes from one of the Sunless games, yeah, as the "original" is much larger and makes it a little more clear. I'm not actually sure if the art was chosen for any reason beyond "it is one of the few times the Bazaar has been depicted literally anywhere", so I'm not sure if the Sun is important or not. |
