- If one has NOT completed the murder investigation at The University, then there is a grind that combines Investigating... and Making Use of Cats to give a maximum of 954 in 10 actions at Watchful 177 and Shadowy 167. Lower attributes will mean either occasional failed challenges and/or using less profitable steps.
- Advance Featuring in the Tales of the University to 9.
- Advance Embroiled in the Wars of Illusion to 10.
- Under Making Your Name: Investigations in the university, interview the department staff three times and conduct forensic analysis once. This should raise Investigating... to 5 and produce 214 Clues.
- Under Bats and Cats, choose Cats..., and then Try to find out about their allegiances once. This should raise Making Use of Cats to 2.

- Alternatively, both Observe without interfering and Buy out the Bookseller's inventory and cast it into the Zee give 1, and require at least 12 actions and an Emetic Revelation.
- 1 for communing with the city, which takes at least 11 actions. Minimum average action cost requires 100% success chance at multiple difficult Narrow Advanced Skill challenges to different Skills.
- FATE The Serpent Muralist unlocks a card with an option to cash out Hinterland Prosperity for an Enigma on a failed check. With maxed Hinterland Efficiency, this comes out to ~13 actions per Enigma. Note that even with a Weasel of Woe there is a 1% chance of getting Sap of the Cedar at the Crossroads instead, but the impact is negligible (and profitable!).

Dreadful Surmise[edit]

Impossible Theorem[edit]
- Locate an Impossible Theorem requires at least 49 Enigmas and 9 actions, and with 300 Watchful will average roughly 52 Enigmas, 18 Sudden Insights, 200, 27 actions, and two trips to the Slow Boat, each with 11 Wounds. Just research it, or if you insist on doing this, keep stacks of Wound Aid requests on you to use before you click 'Onward' and spend/convert your Echoes into other items so that you don't lose money to nothing.
- To Research an Impossible Theorem requires Laboratory Research 13000 and Parabolan Research 300, as well as Laboratory Equipment 7. Optionally, speed this project along by using the Review the Prior Literature card to Relate this problem to a past Enigma. Each Searing Enigma ( 62.5) spent this way gives 500 lab research ( 60.1 as 1/26 of a Theorem, not counting the Parabolan research).

Finally, building Backstory with Mortification of a Great Power sourced from the Khanate approaches 1.63 /action when spending Mortifications in bulk.
- Sourcing Mortification of a Great Power via Hearts' Game allows you to build Cover Identity: Backstory at a rate of 1.3 per action. At its minimum conversion rate, this yields x 29 Memory of a Much Lesser Self over 22 actions ( 1.32 per action). In large batches, the efficiency approaches 1.35 per action.
Moulin / Parabola
- ( Mithridacy / 2) for Dip your Cross in the Waters at the end of the expedition to the Wellspring; requires the Crooked-Cross profession. Can be done once per week. See Moulin Expeditions (Guide) for more information.
- 1 for Look for the fingerking when returning via Parabola from the Wellspring expedition (except the very first time you leave via Parabola, which gives a Mortification of a Great Power instead).
